In middle school and high school, I had a pen pal, a girl about my age from Wales. We corresponded a few times a month and sent trinkets of our lives across the ocean - jewelry she made, postcards from places I traveled, photos of our homes and friends and lives. When she announced my junior year of high school that her family was traveling to Disney Land for a few weeks and I should join them for a long weekend, I seized the opportunity with my parents' support, giving only a brief thought as the plane flew along the east coast that I didn't really know this girl; that I'd be spend five days living with strangers.
In somewhat the same fashion, when a friend from the blogosphere offered her futon for the entire duration of my trip to Hawaii, I seized the opportunity, and only stopped to consider that I didn't really know this girl - that I'd be spending about 10 days living with a stranger - once the plane was in the air and I had no option of turning back. The few friends I tried to explain this to, friends with no real understanding of the blogosphere, were aghast. So I stopped trying to explain and packed my bags.
And, after some mid-flight concerns that I am way cooler on the Internet than I actually am in person, and some sweaty palms over whether or not this was really a good idea, I de-planed in Honolulu. And I had a blast. I owe a huge mahalo to MM for feeding and hosting me and playing tour guide for a lot of the last two weeks. I have lots of tales to tell, but I'm kind of tired and I'm only halfway through downloading all of my photos. So far, this is one of my favorites. It's from this evening on the beach. Since we raced the next day, it was a very tame Sunday. Obviously, I have to go back. Who's in?

Glad you had a good time. Hope to visit San Fran sometime. Sorry that Harley peed on your bed :-)
ReplyDeleteThe other MM! I have to hear all of the stories! And see the pictures, of course, but that you already knew. I hope it was as amazing as the picture makes it look. I'll ring you soon--be prepared!!!
ReplyDelete@MM my mother's dogs pee everywhere. I took it as a sign that he liked me. Come to San Francisco in the fall, so you don't freeze.
ReplyDelete@Meg I took more than 500 photos on two different cameras. I'm sad I can't show you every single one in person.
You really should have consulted me first. I've stayed with Maggs before and I know she's a terrible host! Did she tell you that she was going to buy me carrot cake for my birthday? Wait for it... because it's HER favorite? (I don't like carrot cake, btw) Somehow I ended up buying my own cake that day.
ReplyDeleteGuess I can call my experience lucky because she didn't have any animals with her to pee on my bed.
@D perhaps I should have asked you first, but she made me muffins! And soup! And in return I cooked breakfast at 4 am. Maybe Harley didn't like my cooking, and that's why he peed on my bed.
ReplyDeleteNow that I've gone West, I think I'd like to head north. I've never been to Canada before, and I'm a pretty good cook.....
We've got a great travel group going here...folks visiting SF can stay with me too! I knew MM and Clair would be a great match for fun times!
ReplyDeleteVisiting a new place and staying with a new friend is absolutely the way to travel! I went to Long Beach on whim to visit friends I only met on the Internet and luckily, I'm still alive to tell the tale!
ReplyDeleteNow... lots of blog posts about your travels!
@Kathleen we can host our own blogging convention.
ReplyDelete@dweebcentric Those posts are going to be lots of fun!
